Mercedes beat Somerset 12-1 in five innings on Saturday to sweep their best-of-three area-round series in Game 2 at Calallen High School in Corpus Christi.

After surrendering a home run to center field during the first inning, the Lady Tigers left open the floodgates, pouring in 10 runs to come away with a 10-1 cushion going into the second.

Dalilah Barrera, who recorded 20 strikeouts the previous night in a 3-0 win in Game 1, got the call again Saturday, and the defense surrounding her did their part not to allow a run the rest of the way.

Mercedes (24-2) takes a 12-game winning streak into the regional quarterfinals, where they will take on Corpus Christi Flour Bluff later this week.

CORPUS CHRISTI FLOUR BLUFF 9, EDCOUCH-ELSA 0: At Corpus Christi, the Yellowjackets saw their season come to a close after enduring a sweep in Game 2 of their best-of-three series.

Edcouch-Elsa, which entered the playoffs as the fourth seed in District 32-5A, had pulled off a stunning upset over Edinburg Vela to reach the area round, but they struggled in the area round, where they were outscored a combined 26-4 through two games.

E-E, which was the fourth seed in District 32-5A after winning a play-in game, had beaten Edinburg Vela in bi-district to reach the area round.

CORPUS CHRISTI MOODY 12, PSJA HIGH 0 (5 INNINGS): At Pharr, the Lady Bears lost at home in Game 2 of their season to finish with a 19-11 record.

PSJA High, the second seed from 32-5A, was outscored 5-1 in Game 1 before being swept.

CASTROVILLE MEDINA VALLEY 11, SHARYLAND PIONEER 1 (5 INNINGS): At Corpus Christi, the Lady Diamondbacks again struggled at the plate to lose in Game 2 of their series at Tuloso-Midway.

In only its first year as a school, Pioneer finished third in district before sweeping Brownsville Porter in the opening round of the playoffs.


CLASS 6A

EAGLE PASS 3, EDINBURG NORTH 0: At Laredo, the Lady Cougars were shutout for a second consecutive game, losing their area-round series in Game 2.

North, which finished in a three-way tie for first place in District 31-6A, was the third seed heading into the playoffs. They swept Los Fresnos in the opening round to draw Eagle Pass in area.


CLASS 3A

LYFORD 6, ODEM 4: At Kingsville, the Lady Bulldogs wrapped up their best-of-three series in Game 3, setting up a regional quarterfinal battle against Santa Gertrudis later this week.
