Dalilah Barrera, the reigning All-Valley Softball Player of the Year, put on one of her better performances this season to help lead Mercedes to a 3-0 victory over Somerset in Game 1 of their best-of-three area-round series on Friday at Calallen High School.
Barrera recorded 20 strikeouts to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 series edge, with a closeout opportunity in Game 2 at 1 p.m. today at Calallen.
“Dalilah did very well and the defense helped get the outs,” Mercedes coach Betty Morrell said.
The Lady Tigers scored three in the top of the fifth inning to pull away.
Mercedes has won 11 consecutives games. They nabbed the District 32-5A title and swept Rio Grande City in their bi-district battle last week.
CASTROVILLE MEDINA VALLEY 9, SHARYLAND PIONEER 2: At Corpus Christi, the Lady Diamondbacks lost in Game 1 their best-of-three series.
Pioneer yielded two home runs and stranded six runners on base. They were still within striking distance during the fifth inning, trailing 3-0. Now, the Lady Diamondbacks look to avoid a sweep today when they resume play at 1 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will proceed after 30 mins.
CORPUS CHRISTI FLOUR BLUFF 17, EDCOUCH-ELSA 4: At Elsa, the Lady Yellowjackets allowed an onslaught of runs to lose in Game 1 of their best-of-three series.
E-E dropped its first game of this postseason, and it looks to avoid a sweep today when the series shifts to Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will proceed 30 mins. afterward.
CORPUS CHRISTI MOODY 5, PSJA HIGH 1: At Corpus Christi, the Lady Bears yielded one run in the first inning and never recovered, losing in Game 1 their best-of-three series.
The series resumes at 2 p.m. today at PSJA High.
CLASS 6A
EAGLE PASS 6, EDINBURG NORTH 0: At Laredo, the Lady Cougars dropped the first game in their best-of-three area battle.
The series remains in Laredo, with Game 2 scheduled for 3 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will proceed 30 mins. afterward.
SAN BENITO 2, McALLEN MEMORIAL 1: At McAllen, the Lady Mustangs lost Game 2 of their best-of-three series, effectively ending their season.
San Benito beat Memorial 4-1 in Game 1. The Lady Greyhounds advance to take on the winner of Friday’s Brownsville Veterans-Laredo LBJ one-game series.
LAREDO LBJ 6, BROWNSVILLE VETERANS 5: At Rio Grande City, Tania Castro hit an inside-the-park home run that scored two runs during the top of the sixth inning, and the Lady Wolves topped Brownsville Veterans to win their area-round series.
CLASS 3A
LYFORD 6, ODEM 1: At Kingsville, Lady Bulldogs ace pitcher Clarissa Cavazos had seven strikeouts to help her team win Game 1 of their series.
The victory stretched the Lady Bulldogs winning streak to 15 games.
Lyford looks to sweep the series today with Game 2 set for 2 p.m. at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
