RGV HS Football Roundup: Mercedes clinches third, San Benito bounces back and more..

The Mercedes Tigers picked up their ninth straight victory over the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets 39-22 Friday night at home.

Tyrell Trevino scored three rushing touchdowns, Xavier Sanchez caught a touchdown and a defensive touchdown gave the Tigers a victory over their Mid Valley rivals.

The win also guarantees the Tigers (4-5, 2-2) will finish in third place of District 15-5A DII.

Mercedes finishes the season against Brownsville Porter (4-5, 0-0) at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes. Edcouch-Elsa (3-6, 1-3) will have a playoff deciding game against Valley View (1-8, 1-3) at 7 p.m. at Benny Layton Memorial Stadium in Edcouch.

DISTRICT 31-6A

PSJA HIGH 51, MISSION HIGH 31: At Pharr, quarterback Jaime Lopez accounted for six touchdowns to improve the Bears to 3-1 in District 31-6A and secure a spot in the postseason.

Lopez threw four touchdown passes, connecting twice with sophomore Caleb Salas and once each with freshman Jorge Alaniz and sophomore Ryan Vallejo. The junior gunslinger added a 22-yard touchdown run.

The Bears (4-5, 3-1) hit the road for their regular season finale, taking on Edinburg High (5-4, 3-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

DISTRICT 32-6A

HARLINGEN HIGH 36, BROWNSVILLE RIVERA 7: At Harlingen, senior running back Izaiah Bell continued to make the end zone his home, scoring three times to help the Cardinals improve to 9-0.

Bell scored on runs of 4, 7 and 9, bringing his season total to 24. Harlingen High’s biggest play, however, came with 8:52 left in the third, with senior offensive tackle Roy Reyna lining up in the backfield and punching it in for six.

The Cardinals (9-0, 4-0) wrap up their regular season against Los Fresnos (6-3, 2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen.

SAN BENITO 36, LOS FRESNOS 7: At San Benito, junior running Fabian Garcia scored all five of the Greyhounds touchdowns to bounce back after their first loss of the season last week.

Garcia found the end zone on the ground four times, scoring on runs of 2, 2, 22 and 33 yards. He added a 19-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Aaron Corona.

The Greyhounds (8-1, 3-1) close out the year against Weslaco High (6-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

DISTRICT 15-5A DI

McALLEN HIGH 40, McALLEN ROWE 21: At McAllen, the Bulldogs bounced back in a big way with a rivalry win over the Warriors at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

McHi quarterback Joaquin Valdez and Jayden Herrera ran for two touchdowns each. The Bulldogs defense added two scores with a fumble return for six by Salomon Arroyo and a pick-six by Nathan Rocha.

The win keeps the Bulldogs’ (4-5, 3-3) playoff hopes alive entering the final week of the regular season. McHi will face McAllen Memorial (3-6, 2-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Rowe remains in the playoff hunt at 6-3 overall and 4-2 in district play. The Warriors take on Edinburg Vela (8-1, 5-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday aat McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.
