RGV Football Roundup: Vikings, Raiders highlight big winners during Week 5

Brownsville Pace began District 16-5A DI with a solid win over Donna North on Friday, dominating the Chiefs 48-13 at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Pace quarterback Brandon Narvaez had another impressive performance, and the Vikings had a great day running the ball, Pace head coach Danny Pardo said.

It is always good to start district with a win, he said.

“We are starting to run the ball a little better,” Pardo said. “Keeping it basic, get the kids to not think too much, I think it is working out for us right now.”

“They are playing some good football, so hopefully we can carry that into the next game,” Pardo said.

The Vikings (2-3,1-0) travel to Boggus Stadium to take on Harlingen South at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

BROWNSVILLE RIVERA 32, EDINBURG ECONOMEDES 7: At Edinburg, four different rushers found the end zone for Brownsville Rivera, helping the Raiders snap a two-game skid.

Jesus Hinojosa, Fabian Moreno, Luis Reyes and Edgar Rocha all found scored for the Raiders, with Rocha icing the game with a 63-yard touchdown run with 7:44 left.

The Raiders move to 2-3 as they enter their bye week, while the Jaguars fall to 1-4 on the year. Both teams return to action Thursday, Oct 6, with Brownsville Rivera hosting Los Fresnos in their district opener, while the Jaguars travel to PSJA Stadium for a District 31-6A contest against PSJA High.

LOS FRESNOS 42, MISSION HIGH 13: At Los Fresnos, freshman quarterback Robert Pineda continued his breakout season, rushing for three touchdowns to lead the Falcons to victory Friday.

Pineda scored on runs of 13, 14 and 54 yards to help Los Fresnos wrap up non-district play with a 4-1 mark. The freshman signal-caller has now rushed for seven touchdowns on the year, adding six touchdown passes.

The Falcons (4-1, 0-0) enter a district-wide bye week before kicking of District 32-6A play Thursday, Oct. 6 against Brownsville Rivera (2-3, 0-0) at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.
