Rio Grande Valley FC keep playoff hopes alive with a valuable three points in a 2-0 road win over El Paso Locomotive FC Wednesday night.
The Toros made the breakthrough in the 72nd minute following a Locomotive turnover deep in their own half. Substitute Frank Lopez was fed by Ricky Ruiz inside the box. Lopez picked his spot to take the lead.
RGV FC added insurance eight minutes later. With El Paso pushing for the equalizer, forward Christian Pinzon found space behind the defense. Still with work to do, Pinzon weaved between two defenders to create an opening.
Pinzon’s shot squeaked in at the near post.
The first ever win in El Paso could not have come at a better time. The Toros now have 33 points, four points behind Las Vegas with a game in hard in the battle for the final playoff spot.
The Toros return home after being on the road since July. RGV FC take on New Mexico United at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at H-E-B Park.
