In its second year competing in the District 16-5A duals championship, Rio Grande City swept both boys and girls divisions Saturday at Sharyland Pioneer High School in Mission.

The Rattlers beat Sharyland Pioneer 46-28 in the championship match to win for a second straight year. The Lady Rattlers averaged last season’s loss to Mission Veterans by winning their championship match 36-18 on Saturday.

PSJA High’s boys finished in third place after beating Grulla 51-21. And Edinburg Vela defeated Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial 33-18 for third place in the girls division.

Rio Grande City’s Jose Alonso, who wrestled in the 160-pound division, came away with a 4-0 individual record Saturday, along with teammates Rupert Bautista (132) and Alex Islas (285).

“They did a heck of a job,” RGC coach Ronald Pratt said. “They wrestled with a purpose, all of those kids. They came together with a team concept. But I did see things we need to improve on.

“We found some holes we have to work on, and we got 10 days to get it done (before the district championship).”

On the girls side, Pratt said he was most pleased with his underclassmen, like Kassidy Ramirez and Karolina Solis, each of whom had unblemished records Saturday.

“They all did what they needed to do,” Pratt said. “Every member contributed, especially the rookies. They stepped up, and they were at the right place, at the right time.

“I think they looked at it and said they wanted to go win it because we got close last year (in the girls championship).”
