Raymondville’s Daniel Gutierrez a leader both on and off the diamond

FREDDY GONZALEZ | Valley Morning Star

Raymondville’s Daniel Gutierrez is a name many Bearkat football fans are aware of.

The senior wrapped his final season on the gridiron this past fall and slid right into baseball mode where he has had plenty of success this season.

Gutierrez is currently batting .531, has 26 hits and a slugging percentage of .673. In addition, he has plated 19 runs and swiped 17 bases.

For his efforts, Gutierrez is this week’s Valley Morning Star boys Player of the Week.

“Daniel is the type of player all coaches love to have,” said Kats head coach Judson Savage. “He shows up early, stays late and never quits. He strives to make others around him better with his leadership and he backs it up with his play on the field.
“Being 1 of 2 seniors on this year’s team means that he has constantly had to be an example of the type of teammate to be both on and off the field. The young kids on our team have been able to learn from him and it has shown in their attitude and play.”

The Bearkats are 3-5 in District 32-4A with a game against Rio Hondo on Saturday.
