Raymondville defense faces tough test this week versus Sinton

RAYMONDVILLE — What do you do when the state-ranked Sinton Pirates come knocking on Raymondville’s door?

You make it the Game of the Week.

With an explosive offensive attack that has produced more than 1,900 yards, Sinton’s No. 6 state ranking is well deserved. The Raymondville defense will its hands full this Friday.

What was suppose to be a season of transition for the Bearkats, has turned into a season of optimism thanks to head coach Frank Cantu and his staff.

Putting the right players in the right position has become almost second nature to the Kats.

As the old saying goes, “Offense wins games. Defense wins championships”

And while the Kats’ offense has garnered the most attention by putting the points on the board, the Raymondville defense has gathered some attention for keeping points off of it.

Three players that have stood out for the Bearkats defense have been Derrick Saenz, Daniel Garcia and Ricardo Guajardo.

Guarjardo is no stranger to changing positions. Last season the senior linebacker, who has 44 total tackles so far this season, also saw time at defensive tackle and defensive end spots.

“Last year he moved allover the place but he’s found a home at our linebacker spot this year,” said Cantu of Guarjardo. “He’s one of our captains and one of the ones that is starting to speak up and take control.”

Another player that had a rough spell last year was senior defensive end Garcia. Last year Garcia was a bit “banged up” from his back, but now that he’s healthy, Cantu believes he has a lot to give.

“Daniel Garcia is very quick player and he’s one of the best pass rushers we have,” said Cantu. “He’ loves defense and we’re looking for him to make some plays for us this week.

“He was banged up last season but he worked out in the summer and he’s really starting to feel healthy and we’re really excited to have him.”

On a team where many players play multiple positions, Derrick Saenz is another athlete that has learned to do just that.

With 38 total tackles, the senior linebacker and tight end has become a leader on the Bearkats defense.

“Derrick has really come around,” said Cantu. “From the first game against St. Joe to now, Derrick has improved big time.

“He great at tight end but at the middle linebacker spot he’s made some good improvements. If he can stay healthy and in shape he can be the captain of the defense.”

Last year Sinton squeaked out a 20-14 victory at home. This year the Bearkats will be hoping to get some revenge.
