Rain wreaks havoc on Valley football

It may have been football Friday, but Mother Nature was the one who scored a victory, as rain forced multiple games around the Rio Grande Valley to be delayed, cancelled and postponed.

Harlingen South was set to take on Weslaco East, but the rain and lightning turned a delay into a cancelation.

The game will not be made up and the Hawks go into their bye week still sitting at 0-2, while the Wildcats turn around and face La Joya on Thursday night.

Other cancelled games not being made up are Sinton at Rio Hondo, Port Isabel at Hidalgo, Progresso at Santa Rosa, McAllen Rowe at PSJA Memorial, Corpus Christi London at MMA and Santa Gertrudis Academy (Kingsville) at Santa Maria.

Several games, however, were postponed for later today.

San Benito at McAllen Memorial will kickoff at 6 p.m. tonight, while PSJA North at Los Fresnos was pushed to a 1 p.m.

Mission at Donna North gets a 2 p.m. kickoff and Rio Grande City at La Joya Palmview gets going at 4 p.m. today as does La Joya Juarez-Lincoln at Mission Vets and Brownsville Rivera at Mission Sharyland.

Brownsville Pace at Brownsville Lopez started, but was called late in the second quarter with Lopez up 17-13.

The 2015 Willacy County Cotton Bowl was cancelled, but not for weather reasons.

A fatal car accident in San Benito Friday morning left one Lyford girl dead and another in critical condition, prompting school officials to cancel all extracurricular activities for the day.
