A power outage prior to Friday’s scheduled football game between Brownsville Lopez and PSJA Southwest at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville led to the postponement of the District 16-5A Division I contest until 11:30 a.m. today at the same site.

As darkness set in Friday, there was no power to the lights on the home side of the stadium, nor to the scoreboard, although the lights on the visitor’s side were on.

Fans sat patiently through the delay and cheered when the power came on at 7:51 p.m., which was 21 minutes past the game’s scheduled start time.

It was then announced the game would start at approximately 8:15 p.m. The teams warmed up, and PSJA Southwest soon kicked off to Lopez. On the kickoff, the ball went out of bounds at the Lopez 29-yard line, and the teams lined up for the first play of the game.

But before the ball was snapped, the power went out again. That was 8:15 p.m.

The teams were sent back to their respective locker rooms to wait and see if power could be restored. After about an hour, it was announced the game would be postponed until this morning.

PSJA Southwest is 3-2 overall and 2-2 in district. Lopez is 0-5 and 0-4.

Brownsville PUB continued to work on the issue Friday night.
