Postseason nears for East Valley soccer teams

The UIL soccer playoffs are right around the corner, and many talented Rio Grande Valley teams have or are working to secure their spot in the postseason.

The district certification deadline is Tuesday, and the playoffs are slated to start Thursday with the bi-district round. The area round is March 29-30, followed by regional quarterfinals from April 1-3, regional semifinals from April 5-6 and regional finals from April 8-10. State semifinal matches will be played April 12-13, and the season culminates April 16-17 with the state championships.

The Los Fresnos Falcons (37 points) and the Harlingen High Lady Cardinals (39) have clinched the District 32-6A boys and girls championships, respectively.

In the boys standings, Harlingen South (32) sits in second and Brownsville Hanna (24) is third. Donna North and Brownsville Rivera each have 18 points, followed by Harlingen High with 15. San Benito (12) and Weslaco High (0) round out the district standings.

The Lady Cardinals are taking an undefeated record into Monday’s regular-season finale against the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, who sit third with 29 points. Donna North (30) holds the two-spot and Harlingen South (24) is in fourth. Brownsville Hanna (19), San Benito (8), Brownsville Rivera (3) and Weslaco High (1) round out the standings.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial (34) secured at least a share of the District 32-5A title after defeating Brownsville Pace on Friday. Brownsville Porter (31) sits second, Brownsville Lopez (29) is third and Weslaco East (23) holds the fourth spot. Brownsville Pace (19), Donna High (13), Mercedes (4) and Edcouch Elsa (3) sit in the bottom half of the district standings.

The District 32-5A girls standings are tight with the season quickly coming to a close. Brownsville Lopez and Brownsville Porter hold the top spot with 31 points each, followed by Brownsville Veterans Memorial (28) and Edcouch Elsa (27). In the back half of the standings are Donna High (22), Mercedes (6), Brownsville Pace (4) and Weslaco East (3).

The Brownsville IDEA Riverview boys clinched the first District 32-4A championship in school history March 12 with a victory over Brownsville Jubilee. The Jubilee Titans finished as the No. 2 seed, followed by Brownsville IDEA Frontier in third and La Feria in fourth.

The Hidalgo Pirates finished first in the boys District 31-4A race. Pharr IDEA was the district runner up, Weslaco IDEA Pike finished third and Monte Alto was fourth.

In District 32-4A girls action, Brownsville Jubilee secured the top spot. La Feria finished second, Port Isabel took third and Rio Hondo is fourth. Those teams will face off against District 31-4A, which finished with the Hidalgo Lady Pirates in first, Donna IDEA in second, Raymondville in third and Lyford in fourth.
