Port Isabel, St. Joseph clash in Star’s Game of the Week

Both teams enter Friday’s contest undefeated at 4-0 and both teams have displayed very potent offenses so far.

The visiting Bloodhounds, led by freshman quarterback Kai Money, have scored 172 points in their four games this season.

In Week One, the ’Hounds edged Class 4A Raymondville 38-34. They followed that victory up with a 38-27 win over Lyford in Week Two.

In Week Three, they defeated La Villa 34-28 and, finally, this past Friday they routed Pharr Oratory 62-0.

Against Pharr Oratory, Money passed for 123 yards and two touchdowns while running back Mario Garcia rushed for 130 yards on just seven carries for another score.

After the win, St. Joseph head coach Christian Putegnat told the Brownsville Herald that he was already thinking about the Tarpons.

“We’re confident, but not too confident,” he said. “We just have to be focused and keep doing what we do. Keep the tempo high and keep our defense running they way their running.

“It’s going to be a good game next week (against Port Isabel).”

Meanwhile, the Tarpons have used their patented ground attack along with their always-tough Seawall Defense to outscore their opponents 142-65 this season.

In Week One, the Tarps beat Grulla 29-9, in Week Two they beat Class 5A Rio Grande City 36-27 and in Week Three they stopped Hidalgo 38-17.

And this past Friday, despite a lengthy rain delay and no starting quarterback Trey Mock, who sat out the game with a sore back, the Tarpons rushed for 356 yards to grind out a 39-12 win over Valley View.

The Tarpons also enter the game tied for 15th in the state polls along with Robinson.

Despite their success, head coach Monty Stumbaugh was not all that pleased with his team after Friday night’s win.

“We made a lot of mistakes, but we played hard,” he said. “We’ve got to learn (that) a lot of bad things happen in football, and you’ve got to be ready to come back out and play.

“I was pleased with our effort, but I wasn’t pleased with our execution. We didn’t play defense like we’ve been playing.”
