Play continues on second day of Lyford tournament

LYFORD – The Lyford Lady Bulldogs continued their good form in their tournament with a 64-33 win against the San Isidro Lady Tigers on Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldogs won their pool and advanced to the platinum bracket to face Harvest Christian later Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldogs controlled the game from the beginning, opening a double-digit lead during the first quarter.

San Isidro fought back during the third quarter after being down by more than 20 points. It closed the gap to 40-27, but Lyford responded to the run and opened up the lead again.

“We have had a lot of fun at this tournament, this is a lot of our last year playing together,” Lyford senior point guard Damaris Bermudez said. ‘We are all like best friends with each (other) in school and out of school. It is like a family.

Said junior forward/guard Marley Perez, “(Tuesday) was rusty, but we did pretty good despite having those days off. Today we had one of the best games of the season. We came out with a lot of intensity in the first half.”

Other notable tournament scores early in the day included the La Feria Lions losing a close one to Harvest Christian 51-45. Raymondville beat Santa Rosa 33-7, and Mission Veterans Memorial defeated Port Isabel 44-33.

Raymondville was scheduled to face Mission Veterans later in the evening in the other platinum bracket semifinal. The winner will face either Lyford or Harvest Christian for the championship at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Santa Maria and Brownsville IDEA Riverview both defeated the Rio Hondo JV. Brownsville IDEA Frontier beat Lyford JV Green, and the Roma JV beat Lyford JV White.
