Notebook: The District 32-6A dogfight continues

By MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

In 2014, the District 32-6A title was split four ways.

With three games to go in this district season, not much has changed.

After Brownsville Veterans and Los Fresnos were handed their first losses last week, they fell to 3-1 and joined Harlingen and San Benito in a four-way tie.

With the top of the district crowded, a pair of games becomes more interesting this week.

Harlingen heads to Brownsville to take on the Chargers, with one team leaving with its second district loss.

Meanwhile, Brownsville Hanna and Harlingen South face off in a pivotal game with playoff implications.

A South win will put them in a possible tie for fourth place, while Hanna tries to keep its season alive and avoid a fourth district loss.

South takes on San Benito next week and finishes the season against Harlingen.

San Benito faces Brownsville Lopez this week, while Los Fresnos takes on Brownsville Rivera.

Los Fresnos at Brownsville Vets will face off in Week 10 in Brownsville.

HARLINGEN WINS TURNOVER BATTLE: Harlingen head coach Manny Gomez likes to talk about the statistical importance of turnovers.

In the Cards’ Loss to San Benito, they forced two turnovers, but turned it over twice as well.

In their win this past Friday, the Cards were plus-4 in the turnover battle.

The Cards recovered three Falcons fumbles and picked off quarterback Rene Ortega twice, including once on the final drive to secure a victory.

They also held the Falcons to just six second-half points.

LIGHTEN UP: It has been a tough three weeks for the San Benito Greyhounds.

Their last three weeks have been against Los Fresnos, Harlingen and Brownsville Veterans.

They fell to Los Fresnos and handed Harlingen and Vets their first district losses on the year.

Now, the road leading to the postseason becomes easier.

They face Brownsville Lopez this week, host Harlingen South next week and finish up the year on the road against Brownsville Rivera.

Last year, San Benito loss its final two games and failed to clinch an outright district title.
