Notebook: San Benito defense readying for Mustangs, Speights

The San Benito Greyhounds opened some eyes this past Friday after a 47-23 win over Weslaco East, but have to turn right around and face McAllen Memorial this Friday night on the road.

The San Benito defense held the Wildcats to under 300 yards of offense this past Friday and will have to turn in another solid performance to slow down Memorial running back Trevor Speights.

“Speights is a DI athlete, who plays for a very good McAllen Memorial program and a very good coach in Bill Littleton, so we’re going to go out there and give it the best we got., San Benito head football coach Dan Gomez said.

“Practice has been good and we’re still fine-tuning our game plan. We’re working hard, putting our nose into the ground and getting after it.”

The Greyhounds also had the offense going led by quarterback J.R. Gaitan, who was involved in six of San Benito’s seven touchdowns in Friday night’s win.

As an offense, the ‘Hounds racked up more than 400 yards of total offense for the second consecutive week.

GREAT PROTECTION

Harlingen head coach Manny Gomez said before the season started that his offensive line would be the cornerstone of his offense and it showed in Friday’s 42-28 loss to San Antonio Reagan.

Despite the loss of Davis Ericsmoen for the year, the Cardinal offensive line paved the way for a huge night by running back Leo Tienda.

Tienda rushed for 224 yards on 27 carries, averaging better than eight yards per touch against a Reagan team that allowed just 42 yards in their Week 1 win over San Antonio O’ Connor.

Tienda found the end zone three times and will look to have another strong performance when they face McAllen Thursday night.

HOPING TO REBOUND

The Harlingen South Hawks have had a rough two weeks to start the season.

They began the year falling short to Weslaco 28-24 then followed that up with a 70-40 loss to Edinburg Vela.

This week, the Hawks will host Weslaco East, in a game of teams looking to get on track after big Week 2 losses.
