Three of the Rio Grande Valley’s most memorable moments from the 2015-16 high school sports season are nominees for Moment of the Year.

The winner will be recognized June 14 at the 2016 All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet at DoubleTree Suites in McAllen. Dallas Cowboys legend Drew Pearson is the keynote speaker for the event.

Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers is the presenting sponsor of the banquet. Representing the Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers are Bert Ogden Chevrolet, Clark Chevrolet, Fiesta Chevrolet, Gillman Chevrolet, Payne Weslaco Motors, Rio Motor Co. and Tipotex Chevrolet.

“AIM Media Texas is extremely excited about this partnership with RGV Chevy Dealers,” said Stephan Wingert, Regional Vice President and Publisher of The Monitor. “We have been recognizing the Valley’s top varsity athletes for many years, but with their help we are able to make this event something really special for the nominees across the Valley.”

Pearson, who was inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2011 after a standout career defined by his performances in the clutch, will highlight the function hosted by RGVSports.com in conjunction with the RGV Sports Hall of Fame.

The awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m. and recognizes team and individual standouts in multiple sports over the past year. Tickets are $40. All nominees get in free.

Representatives from the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, The Monitor, the Brownsville Herald and the Valley Morning Star voted on three nominations for Moment of the Year.

The nominees:

>> Trevor Speights, McAllen Memorial: Speights ran for 336 yards in a win over Edinburg North on Sept. 17 to push his career total to 7,856 — more than any other player in the history of Valley high school football. The record-setting carry was a 59-yard touchdown with 7:45 remaining in the third quarter.

>> “Battle of the Arroyo:” In yet another dramatic chapter of the historic rivalry, San Benito scored the touchdown and go-ahead 2-point conversion with 1:39 left to beat nemesis Harlingen High for the second year in a row. It was one of three losses suffered by the Cardinals in 2015.

>> Brownsville Porter boys soccer: In a dramatic finish, Brownsville Porter escaped Frisco Wakeland in penalty kicks 10-9 to win the Class 5A boys soccer championship. The Cowboys were the only Valley team to win a state championship in 2015-16.
