The Mission Veterans Patriots got the bitter taste of a 12-point loss to archrival Mission High out of their mouths and rolled to a sweet 41-10 victory over the PSJA Memorial Wolverines in the District 16-5A DI opener for both teams on Thursday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

“Our conversation with the kids before the game tonight was to find who we are,” Mission Veterans coach David Gilpin said. “We went into the rivalry game last week with a lot of hype. We got knocked off of our mountain. How were we going to respond? I was real pleased with our effort.”

Mission Veterans scored its 41 points in the first half and went into the locker room up 41-3. Following a one-touchdown, two-interception performance throwing the football last week, Patriots senior quarterback Landry Gilpin threw for three touchdowns and ran for the other three.

“Our turnovers were a real sticking point for Landry, (offensive coordinator) Jeff Espino and I,” David Gilpin said. “We needed to get back in the saddle. We’ve got a big game next week against Brownsville Veterans. It’s got to be one game at a time for us, but a game like this was needed.”
