Metro squads starting strong

LA FERIA — Brownsville Veterans Memorial won two games and Pace won one and tied another during Thursday’s first day of the La Feria Girls Soccer Tournament.

The three-day, 24-team tournament on the opening weekend of the UIL soccer season is being hosted by the La Feria Lionettes.

“The cold weather was a factor,” Pace coach Jesus O. Villarreal said. “Once the girls got a feeling for what it was going to be like and got adjusted, they did better with their passing and things like that.”

In pool-play action Thursday, Brownsville Veterans defeated Raymondville 7-0 and PSJA High 4-1.

Andrea Morales and Victoria Morales each scored a pair of goals for the Lady Chargers against Raymondville. Nathalia Torres and Kathryn Bodden each added one, while a shot by Jackie Treviño went off a defender for a goal. Against PSJA High, Morales scored two goals, while Bodden and Treviño each contributed one.

The Lady Chargers complete pool play with a game against the Sharyland High junior varsity at 2 p.m. today.

In Pace’s group, the Lady Vikings defeated Mercedes 2-1 behind goals from Erika Martinez and Krissie Rivera before tying La Joya Palmview 1-1 as JoAnn Sanchez scored Pace’s goal. The Lady Vikings complete pool play against Progreso at 3 p.m. today.

In other pool-play games at the tournament Thursday, Weslaco East edged Port Isabel 2-1, the Donna North JV downed IDEA Frontier 4-1 and Eagle Pass CC Winn defeated Frontier 2-0.

The six group winners from pool play advance to Saturday’s championship bracket competition. Six runner-up teams from pool play advance to Saturday’s consolation bracket. The championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the La Feria football stadium.

At the McAllen Showcase, the Rivera Lady Raiders defeated Corpus Christi King 8-2 Thursday behind four goals by Yesenia Ortiz and three by Daniela Carrion. At the same tournament, the Lopez Lady Lobos were edged by San Antonio Clark 2-1.
