Metro-area volleyball notes: Luck of the Falcons

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The odds are in the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons’ favor.

A victorious coin flip Wednesday awarded the Lady Falcons with their third straight home match of the postseason.

Los Fresnos was awarded homecourt advantage for its seeding match against Brownsville Veterans on Nov. 1, the bi-district match against the Weslaco High Lady Panthers was played at Los Fresnos, and now it will play host to the McAllen Memorial Lady Mustangs at 7 tonight in the area round.

“McAllen Memorial’s always got a great tradition,” Woods said. “No matter who we play, it’s just going to get tougher. The further up the ladder you go, the tougher the competition will be.”

Los Fresnos beat Weslaco High in commanding fashion Tuesday night and looks prepped to compete against any team it comes across. But McAllen Memorial is no slouch, as it defeated Del Rio in three games as well.

Breaking tradition

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers are back in the area round of the tournament for the first time since 2012 and are looking to advance to the third round for the first time in program history.

The Lady Chargers finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed in District 32-6A and swept District 31-6A’s Weslaco East Lady Wildcats in the bi-district round of the postseason Tuesday night.

“I thought we played well,” Lady Chargers coach Lisa Mares said. “We came out ready to play and we started off strong. (The team is) really excited (for the next round).”

Brownsville Veterans will take on the Laredo United Lady Longhorns at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at La Grulla.

P.I. moves on

The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons earned a trip to the area round of the volleyball playoffs after defeating Beeville in three games Tuesday night.

“We played well (Tuesday night),” P.I. coach Julie Breedlove said. “We did a good job under the net, with our serving, and I was happy with the way we moved around the court.”

Gabby Torres led the Lady Tarpons with 11 kills, followed closely by teammate Kelcie Swink, who had 10. Larissa Torres led in assists with 14, and teammate Alex Martinez tied with Torres for the lead in digs with nine.

Port Isabel was the No. 1 seed coming out of District 32-4A, and the sweep sets the Lady Tarpons up to play against Boerne in the area round of the tournament. P.I. will play at 5 p.m. Saturday at Ingleside High School.

One and done

It was an early exit for the Hanna Lady Golden Eagles in the playoffs this year. The No. 3 seed in District 32-6A dropped its bi-district match to the Edinburg High Lady Bobcats on Tuesday night after failing to come back.

The Lady Eagles were behind 2-0 in games and ultimately lost 3-1.
