Metro-Area Volleyball Notes: Lady Falcons’ eyes on the prize

By ADAM KUJAWSKI, Staff Writer

The Lady Falcons extended their perfect record in District 32-6A to 5-0 on Tuesday night with a win over Brownsville Veterans Memorial.

Los Fresnos is considered to be one of the top teams in the Rio Grande Valley and coach Becky Woods knows the success her team has experienced means a lot.

“The kids have worked really hard over the years,” she said. “They don’t only train during the season, they train year-round and that has helped us.”

Last year, the Lady Falcons lost to McAllen Rowe in the regional quarterfinals. Woods wants to see her team do even better this year, though she doesn’t give a prediction.

“I don’t want to jinx us,” she said.

Los Fresnos travels to Hanna to face the 4-1 Lady Golden Eagles at noon on Saturday.

NO SHAME IN LOSING

Losing Tuesday’s match on the road at Los Fresnos spoiled the Lady Chargers’ perfect district record and dropped them to a still-impressive 4-1.

Brownsville Veterans coach Lisa Mares understands that losing is part of the game and that it’s not always a bad thing.

“I’m not saying it’s great that we lost, but sometimes I feel like it keeps (our team) humble,” she said. “Sometimes when you have a lot of success in the beginning (of the season) it gets to their head.

“It’s sometimes good to have something like this because it means they’re just going to have to work harder.”

The Lady Chargers play host to Lopez at noon Saturday.

LEADERS KEEP ROLLING

Port Isabel improved to 5-0 in District 32-4A competition Tuesday night with a three-game sweep of Progreso.

Gabby Torres led the attack with 17 kills, flanked by teammates Kelcie Swink and Simone Harry, who each added 5 kills of their own. Larissa Torres set them up with 23 assists, and Alexandria Martinez played strong defense with 7 digs.

The Lady Tarpons have quietly put together one of the best seasons in the Valley so far with district wins over Grulla, Rio Hondo, Zapata, Raymondville and now Progreso.

Port Isabel will travel to La Feria to take on the Lionettes at 1 p.m. Saturday.
