Metro-area Hoops Roundup: Brownsville Veterans stops Edinburg High

STAFF REPORTS

Defense was key during Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s 51-38 win over Edinburg High in a Class 6A bi-district playoff game Friday at Edinburg High.

“I’m very happy, I’m excited for them,” Gibson said. “The kids did a great job defensively. They really stepped up and did a great job.”

Gibson said the plan was to control the offense of Edinburg High (16-14, 7-5), which averages about 62 points per game, and prevent the Bobcats from running the floor.

“We played man-to-man defense, and I think we frustrated them,” he said. “We got them out of doing what they wanted to do.”

Gibson said Darian Thuku and JP Delgado had outstanding defensive games for Brownsville Veterans (29-6, 10-4).
Alex Marquez led Brownsville Veterans with 18 points.

Next up for the Chargers is an area-round game against Laredo United. The time, date and location are still to be determined.

CLASS 3A
FALFURRIAS 64, BROWNSVILLE IDEA FRONTIER 44: IDEA Frontier’s season is over after a bi-district loss to Falfurrias at PSJA North.

“The boys gave it all they had,” coach Jerry De La Garza said. “They played with great intensity. It’s just the way the game goes. Sometimes shots don’t fall in. We have a lot of young players, and this was a great learning experience for them. We will be back next year.”

De La Garza said it was a close game until late in the fourth, when Falfurrias pulled away.

“We have confidence in our abilities as a team,” he said. “We feel like we can compete with anybody. The game was close until late fourth quarter. Hats off to Falfurrias. They played a great game.”

Rammy Ramirez and Angel Alanis each scored 13 points to lead IDEA Frontier (10-17, 2-6) in scoring. Marcos Arellano scored 10 points.

GIRLS
TAPPS SECOND ROUND
SAN ANTONIO LEGACY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 42, BROWNSVILLE FIRST BAPTIST 35: At San Antonio, First Baptist wasn’t able to recapture the playoff run from one year ago.

First Baptist, which received a bye during the first round, was upended in the second round of the TAPPS playoffs by San Antonio Legacy Christian Academy.

The Crusaders didn’t match up well with Legacy Christian’s post players. And the Lady Rams took advantage, getting the majority of their points in the paint. First Baptist didn’t answer as its shots weren’t falling in the loss.

Valeria Amaro led First Baptist with 15 points, and Libby Landin finished with seven points.

First Baptist returns four solid players next year who hope to improve during the summer.

“We had a good season, we matured some kids, and I guess that’s what it’s all about,” First Baptist coach Marty Bogart said. “I’m looking forward to next season.”
