Metro-area Girls Basketball Notes: Lady Falcons up and down, still have eye on postseason

By ANDREW CRUM, Staff Writer

Despite a recent two-game skid, Los Fresnos is still looking toward a postseason berth.

The Lady Falcons (11-16, 4-6) stand tied with Hanna (17-10, 4-6) and San Benito (14-16, 4-6) for the fourth spot in District 32-6A with just four games remaining on the district schedule.

The Lady Golden Eagles hold the tiebreaker with Los Fresnos thanks to a win over the Lady Falcons earlier this season. Los Fresnos split its two games with San Benito.

“I think with our district it’s up in the air. Obviously now we have to rely on other people to do some things for us,” Los Fresnos coach Kim Edquist said. “I still think we can lose one more game and maybe get back into it. I hate to be in the position where you are relying on another teams to help you out, to get you there when we should have done it in the first place.”

Los Fresnos finishes district with games on the road against Harlingen High (25-3, 10-0) and Brownsville Veterans Memorial (22-7, 9-1), the top two teams in the district. The Lady Falcons play host to Rivera (9-16, 2-8) and the rematch with Hanna.

“We might sneak in, we might not,” Edquist said of the playoffs. “If I see their effort continuing like this and never giving up, I’m OK with that.”

Either way, Edquist remains positive.

“That’s something to build on for next year,” she said. “I’m not calling us out of the picture yet, but if it comes to that point it’s still something to build on.

“We’re still working for this season, but we’re building for next season also.”

FOR THE TITLE?

Brownsville Veterans and Harlingen High find themselves in familiar territory again this season. Both teams challenged for the district title last season, with the Lady Cardinals ultimately prevailing.

Harlingen High holds the upper hand again this season after defeating the Lady Chargers 52-45 a few weeks ago in Harlingen.

The teams play the rematch Feb. 3 at Brownsville Veterans. A win for the Lady Chargers could give them a share of the crown if both teams can continue the dominance they’ve shown throughout the district this season.

PLAYOFF PUSH

As district play winds down, several area teams are within striking distance to reach the playoffs.

After Brownsville Veterans, Los Fresnos and Hanna, Pace (13-17, 5-5) in District 32-5A and Port Isabel (14-12, 5-5) in District 32-4A are each holding steady in fourth place in their respective standings.

Both teams are coming off a win. Pace took care of PSJA High 59-36 at home, and Port Isabel needed overtime to top Raymondville 44-43 on the road.

The Lady Vikings finish with games against Porter and Edcouch-Elsa on the road, and play host to Donna North and PSJA Southwest.

The Lady Tarpons play Grulla and Progreso at home, and they hit the road for games against Hidalgo and La Feria.
