Metro-area Girls Basketball Notes: Gonzalez likes Lady Eagles’ resilience

By ANDREW CRUM, Staff Writer

Hanna played tough against District 32-6A leader Harlingen High but lost to the state-ranked team as several teams have this season.

But that loss didn’t matter much to Hanna coach Luis Gonzalez. He was pleased with the way they never gave up, especially against a talented squad.

The Lady Eagles lost to the Lady Cardinals but overcame a 25-point deficit at one point to lose by 12 points.

“I think if we play like we played (Tuesday), we’ll beat most teams in our district,” Gonzalez said. “I like the way my girls fought the entire four quarters. We could have easily folded, but my girls fought hard and that’s something I’m really proud of these girls.”

Hanna has been up and down this season and is 12-12 overall and 0-2 in district thus far. But with the district season just starting, the Lady Eagles have shown they have what it takes to overcome such obstacles.

“They bounce back, no matter what, they’re going to fight to the end,” Gonzalez said. “Their attitudes were always in the game and they were very positive, so that’s a plus.”

FILLING THE STAT SHEETS

Two Metro-area players are putting up some impressive numbers in the early part of the season.
Port Isabel’s Alex Martinez leads the Rio Grande Valley in steals at 6.2 per game and is eighth in scoring at 14.8 points per game.

The Lady Tarpons are 4-8 overall and 0-1 in District 32-4A, but with Martinez leading the way, Port Isabel is hoping to return to the postseason again this year.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Jordan Rudd leads the Valley in assists at 4.6 per game, but is also putting up good numbers in three other categories. The junior guard is 10th in rebounds (8.4), 12th in scoring (13.6) and 13th in steals (3.6).

Rudd has led the Lady Chargers (13-4 overall, 2-0 in District 32-6A) to the postseason in each of her two varsity seasons and looks to continue that trend this year.

TOP TEAMS

The two best teams in District 32-6A are Harlingen High and Brownsville Veterans. The teams continue to top the Valley top 10 list as well.

The Lady Cardinals (16-1, 2-0) have steadily moved up the state rankings and have won the District 32-6A title the past two seasons.

The Lady Chargers are right behind in second, as they have been during those past two seasons, and hope to challenge the district’s top team once again.

The teams face each other for the first time after the holiday break Jan. 8 at Brownsville Veterans. They meet again Feb. 2 in Harlingen.
