MERCEDES — Anytime Mercedes’ Tyrell Treviño touched the ball on Friday nights, everyone anxiously awaited to see what was next.

The electric playmaker was a touchdown waiting to happen for the Tigers, capable of breaking off a big run at any moment.

His dynamic play garnered the attention of several collegiate programs from across the nation, including preferred walk-on spots to UTSA and Abilene Christian.

Still, it was Texas A&M-Kingsville that won the race for Treviño, with the senior athlete officially joining the Javelinas during a signing ceremony in front of coaches, family and friends Wednesday at Jim Norris Gym in Mercedes.

Texas A&M Kingsville is an NCAA Division II program that competes in the Lone Star Conference.

“Kingsville was the first one on me since my sophomore year,” Treviño said. “The rest just kind of showed more interested later. Kingsville were the ones reaching out every day and showing their commitment to me. I just had to return the honors and stay home. It just built up over the years. Everyone I have here at this signing today helped me build up to this today. I’m appreciative and grateful to all of them. I’m in this position also because of God, so all glory goes to him.”

Treviño did it all for the Tigers during his three-year varsity career. His first two seasons he primarily saw action at receiver, hauling in 94 catches for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Two games into his senior year, the speedster made the move into Mercedes’ backfield, serving as its primary ball carrier. The senior athlete was just as successful as a running back, toting the rock 154 times for 1,476 yards and 20 touchdowns en route to The Monitor’s 2022 All-Area Offensive Player of the Year award.

“Overall, he’s just an athlete,” Mercedes head coach Roger Adame said. “Any game we played in, we felt Tyrell was the best athlete on the field. This season we started off 0-2, and we had a meeting with him and said we had to do something different. We knew we had to get him the ball as much as we could. He was all for it. … He was our punter, returner and played offense. He just didn’t play defense because we had to let him catch his breath at some point. From when he came in as a freshman, he was always that kind of competitor.”

Treviño’s football success dates to his days playing flag and TYFA football in Mercedes, falling in love with the game at a young age.

Summer 7-on-7 tournaments helped the senior athlete realize he belonged with the best of the best, Treviño said, giving him confidence to play with anyone.

“I would go play against some of the top teams,” he said. “Me, personally, I would match up good and win my 1-on-1s. That’s how I knew. I would see guys out there with ‘Bama and OU gear and I would route them up. I know my position.”

Treviño leaves Mercedes as one of the most electric athletes to come out of the program, racking up more than 4,100 all-purpose yards and 50 total touchdowns.

He is set to return to his primary position of receiver at Texas A&M-Kingsville after spending last season at running back.
