FREDDY GONZALEZ | Valley Morning Star
This week’s Valley Morning Star girl Player of the Week is Harlingen South’s Mellory Grannum.
With the help of the versatile junior, the Lady Hawks are sitting firm at second place in a competitive District 32-6A. Also thanks to Grannum, who has seen her stock rise over the course of the district season, Harlingen South has 24 points, which is tied for second with crosstown rival Harlingen High.
“Mellory is an outstanding player and she can play anywhere on the field,” said Harlingen South head coach Omar Pedroza. “If she was to strictly pay forward, she would be one of the best forwards in the Valley. If she was to play midfield all the time, then she would be one of the best at that position, too. But right now there is no doubt she is one of the best defenders in the Valley.
“She can play anywhere because her dribbling skills are amazing and when she gets the ball there will automatically be two or three defend-ers on her because she is that good.”
This year Grannum has spent time in the midfield and at the forward position, but mostly on defense. However, despite her lack of time at the forward position, Grannum has still managed to find the back of the net six times, including a hat tick against San Benito earlier this season.
Tonight the Lady Hawks host the San Benito Lady Greyhounds at Boggus Stadium.
