Meeting set to discuss Chargers baseball player

STAFF REPORTS

A student-athlete who plays for the Brownsville Veterans Memorial baseball team will be discussed during a meeting today by the District 32-6A executive committee.

While the exact reasons or allegations are not clear, the chairman of the committee, Los Fresnos principal Ronnie Rodriguez, will speak on the matter during the meeting.

“We have not received anything in writing as to what the specific allegation is,” Brownsville Veterans athletic coordinator and football coach David Cantu said in a statement on the matter. “We do know it’s concerning our baseball team. We’re happy to accommodate the DEC and discuss the matter. I will have more to say at the conclusion of the meeting.”

The Chargers baseball team (17-1-2, 11-1 in district) is at the top of the District 32-6A standings, one game up over Harlingen South (15-4, 10-2) with two games to play.

Brownsville Veterans and South split their season series, as the road team won each time.

The Chargers finish the season with a game today against Los Fresnos and Tuesday against Lopez. Brownsville Veterans has clinched a postseason berth and, if they win out, will earn the district title outright.

Hanna is in third place in the district race, followed by San Benito, Los Fresnos and Lopez.

Brownsville Veterans baseball coach Joey Benavides and BISD athletic director Mark Guess could not be reached for comment.
