McHi duo nabs weekly honor

McAllen High’s Hunter Curl and Christian Echazarreta earned The Monitor’s Co-Players of the Week after combining for five touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 42-28 victory Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Curl completed 12 of 15 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns, adding 54 yards and one score on the ground. Echazarreta hauled in seven of Curl’s 12 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns, including back-to-back scores of 74 and 75 yards during the second half to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs enter the district-wide bye week in a four-way tie for second place with Brownsville Veterans, McAllen Rowe and Weslaco East, each holding a 3-1 record in District 16-5A DI play.

McAllen High (4-1, 3-1) returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, against Weslaco East (3-1, 3-1) at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.
