McAllen ISD cleaned house at the UIL Region VIII 6A swimming & diving meet finals, sweeping top honors in both the boys and girls competitions.
McAllen High’s boys and McAllen Memorial’s girls took home regional championships after Saturday’s finals at Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center in Brownsville.
McHi won the boys meet with a score of 400, nearly 90 points better than runner-up McAllen Memorial’s 316 points. Los Fresnos finished in third with 293 points.
The girls competition was closer, with McAllen Memorial winning with a score of 314. Laredo Alexander finished second with 250 points, and Los Fresnos came in third with 231.
The top finisher in each swimming event automatically qualified for the UIL state swimming & diving meet Feb. 19 and 20 at Texas Swim Center in Austin. The top two divers also qualified for state.
Los Fresnos coach Albino Cisneros had high expectations for his swimmers, who competed well enough to take home team bronze medals in both competitions. He liked the results his kids had in the meet.
“Even though we didn’t win, I’m proud of those kids,” Cisneros said. “They swam their hearts out.”
Ivana Besteiro won the 50-yard freestyle and helped Los Fresnos finish first in the 200 freestyle relay. Andrea Moreno, Kendall House and Kaylie Castro were the other members of the relay team.
Other Metro-area swimmers also won events. Hanna’s Maya Imperial won gold in the girls 500 freestyle, Stephanie Castillo of Rivera won the 100 freestyle and Jonathan Ashford of Brownsville Veterans Memorial won the boys’ 100 breaststroke.
Lopez’s Thadey Diaz finished second in the 1-meter diving competition, which qualifies her for state.
McHi’s swim coach, Jared Kaminski, thinks there’s still room improvement for his Bulldogs.
“We swam good,” he said. “Our guys can swim faster than they did. So we have some work to do. We still have to do some cleaning up, but that’s good. They swam very well.”
Leading McHi was double-winner Shaine Casas, a sophomore who won the 200-yard freestyle and the100 backstroke.
Casas set pool records in both events, with times of 1 minute, 41.75 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle and 50.09 in the 100 backstroke.
“We did really good,” Casas said. “This is the first time we’ve won a regional title since who knows when. I personally did pretty good. Right now, I’m on pace for where I need to be a few weeks from now. Still, I think I did pretty good.
Max Saenz won the 200 individual medley and Errol Lizzotte won the 100 butterfly.
Casas, Saenz and Lizzote helped the Bulldogs win the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle relays, along with Jorge Garza Rodriguez (200 medley) and Thomas Wilkins (400 freestyle).
Hannah Bradford won two events (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke) for McAllen Memorial. Stacia Benitez, a freshman at McAllen Memorial, won gold in the 100 backstroke.
Bradford and Benitez helped their team win the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays at the meet. Avia Guerra swam in both relays, Sarah Aleman swam in the 200 medley relay and Megan Blevins swam in the 400 freestyle relay.
“It’s heart, the parents and the kids,” McAllen Memorial coach Timothy Nelson said. “The kids have heart, their parents are great and we have a great group of kids at Memorial.”
Robert Anaya won two events for McAllen Memorial’s boys swim team (50 and 100 freestyle). Ayeesha Mohammed came away with two individuals gold medals (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke).
