McAllen Memorial’s Granados breaks Valley record, wins silver medal

McAllen Memorial’s Ayden Granados became the first RGV athlete to record a time under nine minutes Friday, finishing in 8:57.29 seconds to earn silver in the Class 5A boys 3,200-meter run during the 2023 UIL state track and field championships and Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Granados sub-9 minute time breaks the Valley record set by former PSJA Memorial runner and current Texas athlete Cruz Gomez during the 2019 state meet. Gomez clocked in at 9:02.17 that race.

The Oklahoma State signee brings his career track medal count to three, capturing a pair of silvers during last year’s state meet.

Granados will look to add to his medal count during the Class 5A boys 1,600-meter run tonight.
