McAllen Memorial still reigns atop the RGVSports.com Top 10 poll heading into Week 3.
The Mustangs, for the third straight week, received six of seven first-place votes to remain in first place. McAllen Memorial dispatched Edinburg Economedes 56-21 to improve to 2-0.
Edinburg Vela received the other first-place vote and stays at No. 2 in this week’s poll. The SaberCats have scored at least 70 points in each of their first two games, wins over Brownsville Pace and Harlingen South.
No. 3 and No. 4 remained the same in this week’s poll as Los Fresnos and Harlingen High held their spots. The Falcons were impressive in a 40-6 rout of Edcouch-Elsa, and Harlingen High was a formidable foe against San Antonio Reagan in a close defeat in its season-opener.
Weslaco High moved up a spot to No. 5 after its demonstrative 28-13 win over rival Donna High. The Panthers are 2-0.
Emerging running back Joel Pina and La Joya Palmview jumped up two spots to No. 6. Palmview’s dominant running game led the way to another blowout in Week 2 as it held off PSJA Southwest 50-26. The Lobos have scored at least 50 points in each of their two wins.
Brownsville Veterans Memorial made the biggest move up the poll this week, jumping three spots to No. 7. The Chargers are 2-0 and boast two electric wins against Donna High and PSJA North.
San Benito makes its debut in the poll this season at No. 8. The Greyhounds have wins over Edinburg High and Weslaco East.
McAllen High stays at No. 9 after beating Edinburg High last week for its first win of the season. Sharyland High, 0-2 this season, had the biggest drop, falling five spots to No. 10 in this week’s poll. The Rattlers have lost to tough challengers in McAllen Memorial and Laredo United.
Other teams receiving votes were Roma, Weslaco East, Port Isabel and Brownsville Hanna.
