McAllen Memorial getting big yards out of Sean Skaugen

McAllen Memorial had three players rush for more than 100 yards on Friday in a 55-21 win over McAllen High.

Campbell Speights and Emiliano Cruz combined for 269 yards and four scores, but it wasn’t just running backs getting in on the action.

Quarterback Sean Skaugen had another standout performance, something Memorial fans are getting accustomed to. The junior ran for 154 yards and a game-high three TDs.

Memorial coach Bill Littleton described him as a “good athlete, who does a good job with the ball in his hands.”

The plethora of options to run the ball allows Skaugen to show his talents while keeping the defense guessing.

“When you have three guys that can go, it’s hard to key in on one individual,” Littleton said. “They key in on one guy, and it opens ups something else for somebody else.”

Skaugen already has 536 yards and six TDs on 52 carries this season. As a sophomore, he had 503 yards on 46 carries in eight games.

Littleton was complimentary, as usual, of his offensive line. One of most experienced bodies on that line is senior center Marcus Robles. He first played as a junior, after Memorial’s starter went down. Now, it’s his job full time.

“He’s not a selfish player at all,” Littleton said. “He’s a good leader, a good football player, and we’re lucky to have him on our side.”
