With two more weeks left in the high school football regular season, the best of the best in the Rio Grande Valley are starting to firmly establish themselves.
McAllen Memorial and Edinburg Vela, as they have been all season, remain the top two teams in the RGVSports.com Top 10 poll heading into Week 10. Memorial is 8-0 after its 55-21 rout of rival McAllen High last week. The Mustangs earned six of seven first-place votes and continue to be the runaway top team.
Vela is 9-0 after its 27-26 win over Rio Grande City last week. The SaberCats received the other first-place vote. Vela has a bye this week before closing its regular season at Mission Veterans Memorial, another Top 10 team, next week.
San Benito stayed in third, improving to 6-2 after its 45-7 win over Brownsville Lopez. Harlingen High and Los Fresnos swapped places from last week; the Cardinals moved to fourth following their 52-28 domination of fellow Top-10 team Brownsville Veterans Memorial, and the Falcons dropped a spot to fifth despite a 46-6 win over Brownsville Rivera.
Weslaco High stays in sixth, going to 6-2 after another dominating win, this one a 54-14 decision over PSJA Memorial.
Weslaco East, Donna High and Mission Veterans Memorial all moved up in this week’s poll.
East is now seventh at 7-1 after beating PSJA North 36-22. Donna High moves from ninth to eighth, improving to 6-2 and winning its sixth straight game. The Redskins took care of Brownsville Porter, 42-7.
Mission Vets is ninth at 6-2 after its 45-24 win over Valley View. Brownsville Vets took the biggest drop in this week’s poll, losing its second straight game to fall to 6-2 after its 52-28 loss to Harlingen High.
Mercedes, Edcouch-Elsa, Sharyland High and Brownsville St. Joseph also received top 10 consideration.
