McAllen Memorial, Edinburg Vela finish regular season at top of RGVSports.com Top 10 poll

RGVSPORTS.COM

The final RGVSports.com Top 10 high school football poll of the regular season had the top five teams remain the same as last week’s poll, but with a fair amount of maneuvering in the bottom half.

McAllen Memorial finishes the regular season as the Valley’s top team, undefeated at 10-0 and claiming six of seven first-place votes. The Mustangs romped Mission High 67-14 last week to head into the playoffs on a surge.

McAllen Memorial hosts Laredo United South at 7:30 Friday night for its Class 6A, DI bi-district playoff game.

Edinburg Vela claimed the other first-place vote after it, too, went unscathed throughout the regular season. The SaberCats claimed the program’s first district title with a 39-27 win over fellow top-10 mate Mission Veterans Memorial.

Vela visits Brownsville Porter at 7:30 Friday night in Brownsville for its Class 5A, DI bi-district playoff game.

District 32-6A dominated Nos. 3-5 in the poll, as Harlingen High, San Benito and Los Fresnos remained in their respective positions. The Cardinals and Greyhounds are each 8-2, while the Falcons are 9-1.

All three shared the 32-6A title this season.

The bottom half of the Top 10 poll was busy.

Weslaco High remains No. 6 after its impressive 35-28 win over rival Weslaco East last week to claim the District 31-6A title. The Panthers are 8-2 and host Los Fresnos at 7:30 Friday night for its Class 6A bi-district playoff game.

Nos. 7-10 in the poll saw some movement. Donna High moved up a spot to No. 7 after beating Edcouch-Elsa 31-10 last week to earn the District 32-5A championship, its first since 2007. The Redskins are 8-2 and host Mission Veterans Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a rematch of last season’s Class 5A, DI bi-district playoff game.

After its loss to Weslaco High, Weslaco East dropped from seventh to eighth. The Wildcats are 8-2 heading into Thursday’s Class 6A bi-district playoff game against Brownsville Veterans Memorial at Bobby Lackey Stadium.

Mission Veterans Memorial stayed No. 9 after letting a late first-half lead against Edinburg Vela last week slip away. The Patriots are 8-2.

And No. 10 saw a new entrant into the poll for the first time this season. Mercedes cracked the Top 10 with a 7-3 record and are one of the hottest teams entering the playoffs.

The Tigers have won seven of their last eight games, their only slip-up coming against Donna High. Mercedes plays at Sharyland High at 7:30 Friday night in Mission for their Class 5A, DII bi-district playoff game.

Roma and Brownsville Veterans Memorial also received consideration

for this week’s Top 10 poll.

This is the last top 10 poll until the final one for the 2015 season is revealed in December.
