Lyford makes short work of Banquete

With the win the Lady Bulldogs extended their win streak to 14. The last time Lyford tasted defeat was March 7 against 6A opponent Brownsville Veterans.

With a large traveling contingency behind them, the Lady Bulldogs’ offense came alive scoring runs in 4 out of the 5 innings played.

“We did things right and we got 15 girls playing. We did thing well and I hope it continues,” said Lyford head coach Eloy Perez. “We’ve been working as if we’re playing a district champion every week. We’ve concentrated on our hitting quite a bit. We’ve worked on our defense but we work on our hitting and fielding every day.”

Miranda Martinez led the charge for the Lady Bulldogs racking up five RBIs on the night and scoring once.

The second basemen hit an early RBI double in the top of the first scoring teammates Miranda Ramirez and Rebekah Perez to put Lyford on the board first. Martinez went 4 for 4 from the plate and got her second RBI double on the night in the fourth inning giving the Lady Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.

In the circle, ace pitcher threw a one-hitter while racking up nine strikeouts in the game. The senior struck out 9 of 18 batters on the night and scored the last run of the contest.

“She’s our ace, and she’s been great for us all district and all year,” said coach Perez. “It takes her a little bit to get going but she’s a good one and she is tough.”

Up 5-0 after three inning, the Lady Bulldogs erupted for four runs in the fourth putting Lyford up 9-0. And the fifth was much like the fourth as the Lady Bulldogs scored six unanswered runs with team star Miranda Ramirez scoring her third run of the game.

Ramirez went 4 of 5 from the plate. The senior scored three runs and hit three RBIs on the night.

Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is Odem, however when and where has yet to be determined. Coach Perez speculated that both teams will be looking for a best-of- three series.
