Lyford, La Feria both have ups and downs in close Thursday night scrimmage

LYFORDLyford welcomed La Feria Thursday night as the two prepared to begin the regular season next week.

Both teams played a hard fought game that led to a 2-0 controlled portion and a 13-12 live score both in favor of La Feria.

As agreed both sides began with a 20/20 and a 15/15 before going live for the final two quarters.

During the controlled portion of the scrimmage the Lions got on the board as Isaac Galpin and Brandon Perez connected twice to give the visiting side the 2-0 advantage.

After a brief intermission both sides went live, taking the ball at their own 30-yard line to start the possession sequence.

In the third quarter Rusbel Gonzalez powered through the Bulldog defense to give the Lions a 6-0 behind a four yard rushing TD.

But the Lyford defense rose to the occasion as two possessions later Benji Vela took an interception for a 45-yard pick six to even up the score late in the third.

However the Lions took to the running game again as a quarterback scrambled led to a three yard touchdown by none other than Gonzalez for his second rushing touchdown of the night.

Unfazed, the Bulldog offense took the field behind junior quarterback John Rivera.

Although pressured for most of the night, Rivera managed to stay poised as he found Mike Salinas for Lyford’s second Touchdown.
