Lyford boys and girls in control at District 32-3A meet

SANTA ROSA — After seven events, the District 32-3A track and field championships is a one-sided affair.

After Wednesday’s events, both the Lyford boys and girls are a top of the team standings.

On one side, the Lyford girls are the clear frontrunners to take home the district crown, winning five of the seven events and compiling 127 points.

Leading the Lady Bulldogs was Victoria Burns, who won the long jump (14-8), the pole vault (6-06) and the triple jump (31-03).

Other Lady Bulldogs grabbing gold were Talia Planck in the 3200-meter run (12:07.50) and Victoria Vela in the discus throw (102-0).

The Lady Bulldogs took first second and third in the pole vault, long and triple jump.

Trailing the Lyford girls is Edinburg Quest with 34 points. Valery Tobias and Jillian Terry took first (5-0) and second place (4-10) in the high jump, respectively.

Rounding out the field were Idea Frontier (18), Monte Alto (17) and host school Santa Rosa (11).

On the Boys side, things were much tighter at the top with Lyford and Santa Rosa in control of the field.

The Bulldogs (85 points) are holding off Santa Rosa (79 points) with most of the running events still to go.

Lyford’s Samson Sewell the Bulldogs by winning the long jump (19-10) and placing second in the high jump (5-08), while teammate Jesus Barron took home gold in the shot put (41-09) and second in the discus (120-09).

The Warriors won three events on their home turf.

Leo Lara won the high jump with a jump of 5-10 and also placed second in the long (19-9.5) and triple jump (31-06.5).

Other Warriors winning events were Juan J. Castillo in the discus (126-81) and Mark Perez in the pole vault (10-06).

CRAZY FINISH

Trailing Lyford and Santa Rosa is Idea Frontier with 24 points and all those points came in one event.

Jesus Garcia won the 3200-meter run (10:59.05) and it looked like Santa Rosa’s Donovan Olivarez would finish in second.

However, Frontier’s Christian Davila and Jose Quintero passed Olivarez on the home stretch and to take second (11.04.40) and third (11:04.64), respectively.

Olivarez will still head to area after placing fourth (11:04.68).

The meet will continue Friday at 2 p.m. at Warrior Stadium with the running event finals.
