BROWNSVILLE — Los Fresnos swimming & diving coach Jaime Perez was overcome with emotion after his boys and girls teams shined during the District 32-6A meet Saturday at Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center.
The Falcons and Lady Falcons both won district championships, and sophomore Jada Ashford was the female athlete of the meet. Perez and his Falcons were animated and energetic throughout the meet, cheering on one another, and their celebration after clinching the titles was just as ramped up.
“From our top swimmers that got gold medals to our underclassmen that made it to regionals, it was a total team effort. I’m really happy,” Perez said. “First of all, I want to thank God for keeping us safe and allowing us to participate in this beautiful sport that we love. We still have a lot of work to do because we want to do our best at regionals. With a lot of hard work comes a lot of success. I’m just super proud of my athletes.”
The Lady Falcons picked up a dominant win, accumulating 214 points as they won 10 of the 12 girls events. Harlingen South was second with 102 points and Harlingen High finished third with 58. Weslaco High (54), Brownsville Rivera (39) and Brownsville Hanna (19) rounded out the field.
Harlingen South’s Camille Conlu Lizada picked up the two golds Los Fresnos didn’t, winning the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke. Ashford, the high-point female for the second year in a row, won individual golds in the 50 and 100 freestyles, and she was a member of the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.
“Since practice got cut short, we just had to work hard in practice, and it just feels good to show what I can do and get to come back next week,” Ashford said. “I feel like I could’ve gone a little faster, but overall, it was good for district. It’s an honor to be a part of the Los Fresnos swim team. Everyone has worked hard for what we accomplished, and there were a lot of good swims today.”
A standout race for Perez was the girls 100 breaststroke. Los Fresnos sophomore Ariana Mancillas and junior Maria Jimena Trevino tied for gold with a time of 1 minute, 16.81 seconds, and freshman Josefina Flores finished fourth to qualify for the regional meet.
“That was amazing. As a coach I root for everybody, so what better gift than two gold medals? It doesn’t get better than that,” Perez said. “And in that same race, we had a freshman, Josie Flores, who has been working really hard. She ended up fourth place, and I went to congratulate her and she didn’t know what it meant, and then everybody picked up on it and started cheering, ‘Regionals.’ It does not get better than that.”
The Los Fresnos Falcons won five events and totaled 170 points to win the boys title. Brownsville Hanna was second with 114 points with senior Quinten Deysel, the male athlete of the meet, leading the way. Weslaco High (89 points) was third, followed by Harlingen High (72), Harlingen South (40) and Brownsville Rivera (18).
Deysel picked up wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and anchored two relays. His strong final leg helped the Golden Eagles clinch gold in the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet, and he helped the third-place 200 freestyle relay.
“It feels good to represent my high school and lead my team in the right way, and lead them to what we’ve accomplished so far,” Deysel said. “Coming into it, I didn’t know what to expect. My times were a little off, but once we started swimming I felt really good and I felt like I was back to my old self. Seeing my times be pretty good, it was awesome.”
Los Fresnos senior Anapaula Hernandez and sophomore Evangeline Wrinkle finished first and second, respectively, in the girls 1-meter dive. Brownsville Hanna senior Angel Alvarez won the boys 1-meter dive.
Falcons coach Stephanie Irving Esquivel was named the diving coach of the year for helping their success, and Perez won on behalf of his swimmers.
