HARLINGEN — It might have been a cold night outside, but the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons were on fire Friday evening at Boggus Stadium.

Gabby Moya and Claire Castaneda combined for three early goals as the Lady Falcons handily put away the Harlingen Lady Cardinals 4-0.

“We treat every game like it’s a playoff game and we don’t underestimate our opponents and we came in knowing it would be a fight,” said Los Fresnos head coach Patricia Hernandez.

After the break Harlingen attacked and found the back of the net early, however it was ruled offsides.

Harlingen would get another attempt at goal just moments later when a Lady Cardinal attacker beat two Lady Falcon defenders. However, the shot sliced wide of the goal.

With 25 minutes remaining in the game, Los Fresnos speedster Moya ran past Harlingen’s back four and crushed a ball towards the net, only to see it hit the frame and bounce out of the box.

Minutes later Moya would find herself one-on one with the Harlingen’s keeper Gabi Vargas, but Moya chipped the ball over Vargas but also over the goal.

Moya finished the night with a brace (two goals).

With 17 minutes on the clock the Lady Falcons found the back of the net for the fourth time. Allison Spier attacked on the left flank and cut in towards goal before perfectly placing a curling a shot passed an on looking Vargas.

BOYS

LOS FRESNOS 2, HARLINGEN 1: In the second game of the evening Los Fresnos rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Cardinals 2-1.

Two goals from Erick Arellano were enough to give the Falcons the win.

“I think it was a good game because we were attacking and getting to the goal,” said Los Fresnos Javier Navarrete. “We’ve been struggling the last three games. We’ve been playing well, but we just can’t finish and tonight we did the same thing but we won it with under two minutes.

Within the first five minutes of the game, Harlingen’s Jose Martinez scored from a free kick attempt, putting the Cardinals ahead 1-0 early.

However, just 10 minutes later, Los Fresnos’ Arellano evened up the game at 1-1, after finishing from close range.

With the game clock ticking down, Arellano once again found the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

“One thing this team has been doing is competing for 80 minutes and that something we preach,” said Navarreta. “Today we fought and fought and never gave up. Erick has been missing but tonight he scored two of them.

“He was our MVP in this last tournament in Corpus and just like any player he’s had his ups and downs but tonight he turned it around.”
