SAN BENITO — The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons are doing the best they can to put some distance between themselves and their opponents in the District 32-6A volleyball race.

The Lady Falcons remained undefeated as the 32-6A leaders at 5-0 with a motivated and efficient 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 victory Tuesday night at San Benito.

The Lady Greyhounds came into the match as the district’s lone third-place team at 2-2. They now share third place at 2-3 with Rivera, a five-set winner Tuesday at Harlingen High. Hanna remains right behind Los Fresnos at 4-1 after winning at home, also Tuesday, in five games against Harlingen South.

Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods said her team had a little extra motivation going into Tuesday’s confrontation because San Benito had beaten the Lady Falcons in five games during a non-district match there Sept. 15.

“We were ready to play,” Woods said. “We wanted this match bad. San Benito beat us the last time we faced them here in this gym, and we’ve been working extremely hard for this rematch so we could do better.

“We wanted to win and go 5-0 in district,” Woods added. “We’re just taking it one match at a time and one game at a time. That’s all we can do.”

Los Fresnos did enough to stay out front virtually the entire way, although the Lady Greyhounds continually made it close.

“We had to get the lead and keep the lead,” Woods said. “That was the main thing (I wanted us to do). I told the girls if we could do that, we would be all right. We can not afford to play from behind any more against anybody. I’m talking about the rest of the season (particularly in district).”

The Lady Greyhounds pulled to within 18-15 of the lead during the opening game before the Lady Falcons pulled away and won the set 25-17 when San Benito hit a volley too long.

The score was tied at 15 and 17 during the second set, and San Benito later trailed by only one point twice, 21-20 and 22-21, before Los Fresnos surged ahead at the end and took the game 25-21 when the Lady Greyhounds hit into the net.

Los Fresnos led by as many as six points, 12-6, during the third game. Powered by the kills and tips of Devany Castillo and Alysa Naranjo, San Benito battled back to within one point, 18-17, on a tip by Castillo. From there, the Lady Falcons pulled away again to sweep the match.

A well-placed serve for an ace by Los Fresnos’ Jasmin Garcia landed just inside the back line on the final point to make it 25-20 and end the match.

Sandra Salazar led the way for Los Fresnos with 10 kills, and Garcia added seven kills and five blocks. Isis Delgado contributed 13 digs and 20 service receptions, and Sarah Villarreal had 11 digs and 38 assists.

Also for the Lady Falcons, Gaby Cuevas had eight digs and seven kills, and Jovanna Adame had eight digs. Alex Garcia added six digs.

District 32-6A has an open date Saturday and resumes play Oct. 9. On that day, Los Fresnos will be at home against Harlingen South, and San Benito will be at Harlingen High.
