Mireya “Maya” Guevara already has her next stop lined up with one season softball season left to go.

Guevara, a senior shortstop player at Los Fresnos, signed to play softball for Alvin Community College on Friday.

Getting to play at the next level is something she’s looked to do since she started as a left fielder for Los Fresnos during her freshman season.

“I don’t even know where to explain (it),” Guevara said. “This has been my dream ever since I was little. It hasn’t been easy throughout the years, but as long as you work for it you can get wherever you want.”

Traci Blackman, who has coached Los Fresnos softball for four years, had a hard time holding back her emotions when talking about what it means for Guevara to get an opportunity to play college ball.

“It’s always exciting. I’ve had a few of them (go to play in college),” Blackman said. “But Maya was a freshman when I first came (to Los Fresnos), and she’s a four-year starter for me. She’s a great player and anytime you can get a kid to sign to play at the next level is a pretty good feeling.”

Guevara made The Herald’s All-Metro softball teams as a shortstop in 2014 and 2015.

She also started for Los Fresnos during three straight postseason runs, including a district title and a trip to the third round of the playoffs in 2014.

It still hasn’t sunk it that she has a future in softball outside of Los Fresnos, but Guevera is ready for the challenge.

“I actually don’t think I’ll take it (in) until the day I’m leaving, and I’ll be like ‘Whoa, it’s actually happening,’” Guevara said. “I’m getting to play at the next level. I’m very happy for it, and I’m very thankful for everybody supporting me through the years.”
