PHARR — With plenty of rain, both teams struggled to hold on to the football and weather delays that interrupted the game a few times.

But Los Fresnos preserved, overcoming a first half deficit to stun the Raiders with 21 unanswered points in the second half to defeat PSJA North 35-34 on Friday.

“It was a wild night,” Los Fresnos coach Clint Finley said. “But it was hard to get in sync early on.”

The Falcons fell behind the Raiders early due to their own mistakes.

“It was wet, there was a lot of water,” Finley said. “The boys did good, but we struggled with turnovers. Thankfully the second half was better.”

Los Fresnos was down 34-14 in the second half, but didn’t give up. The rain finally let up and the Falcons secured the football much better despite the mud-caked field.

Los Fresnos continued to rely on its running game and were down just 34-28 with a little over a minute to go in the game and the ball at its own 17-yard line.

Over the next minute, the Falcons put together an 83-yard drive, capped by running back James Rangel, who found the end zone with just 25 seconds left to tie the game at 34.

Los Fresnos added the extra point and completed the stunning comeback.

Running back Eli Cruz and quarterback Pierce Ruiz each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for Los Fresnos.
