The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons appeared to be on cruise control during Tuesday night’s 25-13, 15-16, 15-14 bi-district round win over the Weslaco High Lady Panthers.

District 32-6A’s No. 1 seed again flexed its muscle, winning three straight games in dominating fashion. The Lady Falcons were strong all around, and what few points the Lady Panthers did win primarily came from Los Fresnosmiscues.

“I think (my players) looked good,” Los Fresnoscoach Becky Woods said. “There were a few times we had our mishaps, we let the ball drop a couple times that I didn’t like. We’ve got to talk on that back row. Every point counts no matter who you play.”

Game 1 started out with the two teams tied at 3, but the Lady Falcons surged ahead and never looked back, winning 13 of the following 14 points. Sam Ibarra powered Los Fresnos during the run, contributing four kills. The Lady Panthers managed to score a few points the remainder of the game, but never could string enough together to close the gap.

The second and third games each resembled the first. Weslaco High stayed close for a handful of points each time, but the Lady Falcons pulled away. The Lady Panthers won three consecutive points once during the remainder of the match.

The loss ended the Lady Panthers’ season, one that saw a first-year coach in AnissaGarcia take her team to the playoffs after a five-year hiatus.

“I’m so proud of them,” Garcia said. “I’m so proud of what we did this year, especially with our five-year drought. We had high expectations to make the playoffs and we did it, we’re here.

“There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Los Fresnos is a great team. We played our heart out,we did the best we could. We changed Weslacovolleyball this season.”

Ibarra led all players with 13 kills, and the Lady Falcons’ Jackie Kingsbury and Alexandra Cano added nine and seven, respectively. Teammate Peyton Sales led the match with 26 assists.

For the Lady Panthers, Brooke Bloomquist had eight kills, Sydney Cid assisted on 22 points, and Lindell Galvan chipped in 16 digs.

The Lady Falcons next face McAllen Memorial at a time and date yet to be determined.
