BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Lopez’s Christy Garcia scored 14 points and Kassy Aguirre chipped in 12 points to help the Lobos pull away from the San Perlita Trojans for a 50-35 win in the BISD girls tournament Thursday at Hanna High School.
Brownsville Lopez held off a late surge from the Trojans. San Perlita cut a 19-point deficit to 12 with two minutes left in the game, but could not capitalize further.
The Lobos secured a comfortable lead during the third quarter after creating some points off turnovers.
With the score at 30-24, senior Judith Rodriguez drained a 3-pointer. Aguirre followed up with three straight baskets from steals, and Rodriguez again hit from deep to put the Lobos up 44-25.
Brownsville Lopez head coach Filiberto Reyna was pleased with how his team responded from the third-quarter challenge.
“They came out and played tough in the third quarter,” Reyna said. “In that stretch, I think we played really well. Kassy Aguirre comes out and plays a great box-and-one for us, and she can shut down any player, I think.”
The Lobos began pulling away from the Trojans late in the first half when Lizette Noyola and Garcia combined for 11 of the team’s 15 points during the second quarter, giving the Brownsville Lopez the 29-21 advantage into the half.
San Perlita’s Daniella Ramos and Arabella Rodriguez both finished with 12 points to lead the Trojans in scoring.
Ramos had 10 of her points in the first half as the Class 1A Trojans hung tough with the Class 5A Lobos.
“I thought we did OK,” San Perlita head coach Marco Mungia said. “Our goal this morning was to come with energy. They gave us a lot of our good looks and a lot of good situation looks that are only going to make us better.”
The Trojans’ goal this tournament is to get better, Mungia said.
“Being a 1A in a 6A and 5A tournament, we are the little ones,” Mungia said. “We are the David against the Goliaths. So when we come in here and if we can take a game or two, that is a big win for us and motivation.”
BISD girls tournament play returns at noon today with Brownsville St. Joseph facing Brownsville Rivera and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln against Mission High at Brownsville Hanna High School.
Brownsville Porter takes on Lyford and Mission Veterans faces Port Isabel, also at noon at Brownsville Porter High School.
