Lionettes look to shine at District 32-4A tourney

The Lionettes took home gold at last year’s District 32-3A meet to send a contingent to the Region IV-3A competition.

La Feria is now part of District 32-4A, but head coach David Briones remains confident that his girls still have what it takes despite the stiffer competition.

“This new district has been much more competitive, but the girls have really been able to step things up and I know they can handle themselves (today),” Briones said.

Sophomore Isabel Prado and senior Celica Quintana are expected to lead the Lionettes, Briones said.

“Isabel was our league MVP last season as a freshman and Quintana has won her last two tournaments, and has really been on a role,” Briones said.

Briones went on to say that he expects Zapata, who won the District 31-3A title last year, to be the Lionettes’ fiercest competition today.

“They (Zapata) have a couple of girls who are really good, but I think ours are better and can bring home the title,” he said.

On the boys’ side, meanwhile, Briones said he expects Raymondville to be the team to beat along with Rio Hondo.

The Lions, who won the league crown in 2013, are a pretty young, inexperienced team and Briones said he does not expect them to contend this year.

The top two teams along with the top two individuals not on the winning teams, advance to the Region IV-4A tournament, which is set for next Monday and Tuesday in Corpus Christi. The girls will play at Oso Golf Course while the boys will play at Lozano Golf Course.

The 4A state tournament is set for April 27-28 at Onion Creek Golf Club in Austin.
