Lady Raiders’ Rostro falls in regional

STAFF REPORTS

Rivera senior Julissa Rostro accomplished her goal of making it to the Region IV-6A tennis tournament.

Unfortunately for her, Rostro fell behind after the first game to first-round opponent Beatriz Benavides from Laredo Alexander. The senior mounted a comeback during second game, but it wasn’t enough as Benavides kept the edge and won 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday at McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio.

“(Julissa) played a really good match, she had some long points,” Rivera coach Danny Espinosa said. “But her opponent played a really good match too.”

Espinoza said his senior won two straight points (after being down 4-1) in the second set and seemed poised to make the comeback.

“We caught up to 3-4 and we were serving,” he said. “But it didn’t happen, we had a bad game. From there we lost 6-3 in the second set.

“We got it close, but when we had the opportunity we let it go away.”

Unfortunately for her, the loss ends the high school tenure of Rostro, whose success increased each season during her four-year career for the Lady Raiders.

“She had four great years with us,” Espinosa said. “Of all the female players I’ve had at Rivera in my 22, 23 years, she’s by far one of the top female players.”
