Lady ’Hounds’ season comes to an end after bi-district loss to Edinburg

SAN BENITO — “Let’s go Greyhounds, let’s go!”

The San Benito crowd definitely made its presence known Tuesday as the Lady Greyhounds took on the Edinburg Lady Bobcats in the first round of the Class 6A volleyball playoffs.

The energy from the home crowd lifted the Lady ’Hounds throughout the contest, but the Lady Cats weren’t intimidated as they fought their way back from a deficit in Game 3 to tie the match at 24-24, then eventually scored the necessary two points to win the set and match, 25-18, 25-21, and 26-24.

The power hitting from Edinburg was what made the difference in the match and broke the wall of the San Benito defense several times.

Lady Greyhounds head coach Ruby Medina commented about the power hitting of Edinburg.

“They do have talent and dominate in that aspect of the game,” she said.

Although Edinburg’s striking attack gave the Lady Cats the slight advantage, the Lady ’Hounds were quick to adjust and stepped up their defense in the later games.

“I felt my girls played well against the power hitters from Edinburg and didn’t let the games go so easily,” Medina said.

San Benito began Game 2 with a 5-0 lead and eventually extended that lead to 14-7 making it their largest lead of the night.

With the Lady ’Hounds finally getting into the groove, they looked well on their way to tying the match at 1-1.

But after a few timeouts and several rotations later the Lady Cats rallied to win the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

“There was one rotation due to injuries and we didn’t have our power hitters in there,” Medina said.

That hurt the Lady ’Hounds’ ability to maintain their lead and defend against the rally from Edinburg.

In Game 3, the Lady Greyhounds were once again leading most of the way until Edinburg came away with the victory in the end.

Coach Medina said she is optimistic about the future of her team and expects her returning lettermen to pave the Lady ’Hounds’ way back into the playoffs next season.
