SAN BENITO — Breanna Gonzales scored 15, Christina Montez had 11 and Leeanne Ledesma chipped in 10 points as the Harlingen South Lady Hawks defeated the San Benito Lady Greyhounds 50-39 at the San Benito gymnasium Tuesday evening.

With the win, Harlingen South’s record goes to 16-13 overall and 4-2 District 32-6A, with a big game against crosstown rivals Harlingen High looming on Friday.

“We had some girls step up and have a good game like Breanna,” said Harlingen South head coach Kelly Garrett. “It’s a huge game coming up, we just got to go out and do our thing and we have to finish plays, and I just told them that right now.

“If we don’t finish plays on Friday it’s going to be a long night. We need to make sure that we’re ready and we need to make sure that we play our game. If we do all the little intangibles, then we will be fine.”

After finishing the first quarter with a 6-4 lead, the Lady Hawks exploded with 19 points in the second, taking a 25-11 lead into the half.

In the third, the Lady ’Hounds went toe to toe with the Lady Hawks however, San Benito failed to cut Harlingen South’s lead to fewer than 10 points.

“I think we just couldn’t match them in the first half because they shot better than we did,” said San Benito head coach Abel Moreno. “The girls did a good job of running the offense but the shots didn’t go in. Harlingen was able to get away and we couldn’t close the gap.

“In the third we did matched them shot for shot but we just had trouble stopping them.”

With the loss the Lady Greyhounds dropped to 13-14 overall and 2-4 in district.

Miranda Vallejo led the team with 12 points, Larissa Garcia had nine and Emily Barraza contributed eight.

This Friday, San Benito travels to Brownsville to take on Hanna.
