Lady Crusaders advance to final four

Staff Reports

The Brownsville First Baptist Lady Crusaders defeated host school Houston Family Christian 47-11 on Saturday, punching their ticket to the TAPPS 1A state semifinals.

The win marks the first time any basketball team from First Baptist has reached the final four.

“We were really happy. We were talking after the game, and there wasn’t one aspect in the entire game that we didn’t beat them in,” First Baptist coach Terry Roberts said. “It was a total team effort. The bench played well, and we only had one player in double figures.”

Haley Boone led the Lady Crusaders with 11 points and was followed by teammates Liz Roberts and Sandy Masso, who had eight and seven points, respectively.

First Baptist will next play Mission Juan Diego at 6 p.m. Friday at Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield.

Juan Diego is in District 6-1A along with First Baptist, and the two schools have played each other four times this season.

“We played them twice in the preseason and twice in district,” Roberts said. “We beat them three out of four times, so I feel our chances are good. They’ve improved a lot, though, so I think any team could win.”
