Brownsville Veterans Memorial and Rivera repeated their success in the Brownsville city track & field meet on Friday at Sams Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Chargers won 10 events to claim the team title for the second straight time with a score of 221, a large margin over second-place Hanna (117) and third-place Rivera (84 1/2). Pace was fourth (77) and St. JosephAcademywas fifth (54), they were followed by Lopez (43 1/2) and Porter (2).
“That was the mindset this morning, to go out and compete, have fun and give us 110 percent and whatever happens,” Brownsville Veterans coach Jaime Castaneda said. “I give a lot of credit to the coaches, to the kids for doing their job and being successful today. I’m very proud of their efforts,I think it’s a step in the right direction.”
The Raiders also went back-to-back in the city meet, winning eight events and finishing with 192 points and a comfortable advantage over runner-up Brownsville Veterans (135) and third-place Hanna (87). Porter finished fourth (83), St. Joseph was fifth (49) and they were followed by Lopez (18) and Pace (12).
“I have a great coaching staff,” Rivera coach Omar Gonzalez said. “A throw coach that does a hell of a job.Our long-distance guy that took his cross-country team to state got us all those points in the long-distance events. We competed in the middle-distance events, so we’re a well-rounded team, and the kids ran well today.”
The Lady Chargers had two multiple winners, Karen Amacio and Clarissa Chavez. Amacio took the long jump (15 feet, 3 3/4 inches) and the triple jump (32-6). Chavez won both the shot put (36-4 3/4) and discus (126-9).
“Honestly, I could have done better, but the weather wasn’t helping me,” Chavez said. “I think I’m ready for district. I’m confident I’ll do well, but there’s always run for improvement.”
Adrianna Gracia won the 100-meter dash (13.84), Krista Lopez took the 200 (28.52) and Haley Allen won the 400 (1:02.69). Rachel Ysaguirre won the 800 (2:30.05) and the girls relay teams won the 800 relay (1:50.91) and the 1,600 relay (4:17.87) for the Lady Chargers.
St. Joseph had multiple winners, as Megan Lopez won the pole vault (10-6) and Gaby Garza took the 100 hurdles (15.41) and the 300 hurdles (46.24) despite feeling under the weather.
“There were pretty good times considering the environment, the wind and everything,” St. Josephcoach Meme Garza said. “I didn’t really want her to run today, but she’s a lot tougher than I am.”
Gaby Garza admitted it was a challenge after being sick and fighting the weather.
“I don’t like running in the cold weather,” she said. “I would have liked faster times. I’ve run faster, but those were average times. I tried my hardest so I could do goodtoday.”
Mariana Sanchez won both the 3,200 (12:13.86) and the 1,600 (5:40.00) for the Hanna girls. Maria Avila of Pace won the high jump (5-2), and the Rivera girls won the 400 relay (52.69).
On the boys side, the Raiders also had multiple winners. Anthony Garza won the 800 (1:59.09) and the 1,600 (4:43.72), while teammate Emmanuel Guerrero took the 110 hurdles (17.64) and the 300 hurdles (43.22) for Rivera.
Jonathan Herrera won the 3,200 (10:01.62), Angel Espinoza took home the discus (180-8 1/2), Arnold Mendoz took the 400 (52.79) and the boys relay team won the 1,600 relay (3:34.70) for the Raiders.
Runner-up Brownsville Veterans claimed three events. Jorge Robledo won the shot put (45-10 1/2) and the boys relay teams took the 400 relay (43.99) and the 800 relay (1:34.02) for the Chargers.
Anthony Gonzalez had an outstanding day for Porter. Gonzalez won three separate events, the long jump (20-4), the 100 (11.57) and 200 (22.83) for the Cowboys.
Alex Herrera, fresh off playing for the Eagles’ basketball team, took the high jump (5-10), and Johnny Ibarra won the triple Jump (41-2) for Lopez.
With the win, the Rivera coach is more confident as the team prepares for district next month.
“We’re going to be right in the thick of things (in district),” Gonzalez said. “If we can keep healthy, who knows what can happen in the end?”
