Lady Cardinals up to No. 12 in state hoops rankings

The Harlingen Lady Cardinals continue to impress on the basketball court this season as they recently beat Brownsville Rivera to improve to 15-1 on the season.

They also continue to rise in the state rankings as they moved up to No. 12 in Class 6A on the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Tex Preps Basketball Magazine rankings, which were released Monday.

A few weeks ago, the Lady Cards were ranked 15th.

Their only loss of the season came against San Antonio Clark, which is ranked 11th, at the McAllen Border Bash Tournament last month. Clark beat the Lady Cards 58-29.

Despite the recognition, Lady Cards head coach Ashley Moncivaiz said her team isn’t focused on state rankings.

“It’s an honor for our program to be recognized, but we really want to make our mark in the postseason where it counts,” Moncivaiz said. “The girls are focused on being the best they can every night they step on the court.”

The Lady Red Birds look to improve to 16-1 tonight when they take on Brownsville Hanna in a District 32-6A contest.

The Lady Cards are the only Valley girls team on the Class 6A list right now, but in Class 5A, the Sharyland Lady Rattlers (6-1) are ranked No. 21.

On the boys side, Brownsville Veterans and Edinburg Vela continue to make the grade in Class 6A and 5A, respectively. The Chargers (9-2) are ranked 23rd and the SaberCats (17-1), who won the C.E. Vail Tournament in La Feria this past weekend, are locked in at No. 15.

In Class 3A, the red-hot Lyford Bulldogs (11-2) made the cut at No. 25. The Bulldogs are busy this week. On Monday they played Macedonian Christian Academy, they host Raymondville tonight and on Friday they hit the road to take on San Diego.

Finally, in Class 2A, San Isidro (10-1) continues to impress as the Tigers are ranked 15th.
